Following the last podcast Charles tells Keith about his process when entering a shoot site unseen. The podcast talks about process and set sequence as afforded by the location and natural light. The discussion turns towards the end of the shoot when Charles discovers he has a dead spare battery and how he manages that situation along with previous camera situations. Keith sent Charles the petapixel video (link below) for how people in other industries responded when asked to do free spec work. The conclusion is that photographers should all just say no to free spec work. Or is it? Charles and Keith discuss the merits of asking for and providing free spec work. http://petapixel.com/2015/11/05/this-is-how-people-in-other-industries-respond-when-asked-for-free-spec-work/ http://madmen.wikia.com/wiki/American_Airlines http://www.ivoox.com/road-trip-podcast-part-ii-commercial-concerns-audios-mp3_rf_8712549_1.html Learn more about Charles and his latest projects here: Website: http://www.lucima.com Instagram: https://instagram.com/charleslucima Facebook: http://facebook.com/charleslucima tumblr: http://lucima.tumblr.com Podcast: http://lucima.podomatic.com

Missed Opportunity

A private workshop photographer tells Charles about a request to speak about fashion photography at a local college. Except he isn't a working professional fashion photographer. And to make matters worse, his "arch rival" is speaking as well. So he declines the invitation. This podcast is about what Charles would have asked this photographer do in this situation. This is a learning lesson about opportunity, perspective, defining success, and not missing an opportunity to differentiate yourself from the competition. For the first time Charles goes against photographers going pro. Precision

Charles makes a mistake and gets really upset about the situation. Thus a podcast was born. This podcast talks about mistakes. Systematic versus random errors. How little mistakes can reflect poorly on you. How little mistakes can cost you time, money, or even your life. This podcast is chockfull of examples about how being precise can truly benefit you as a photographer. Precision should be a guiding philosophy in your journey as a photographer. What does this mean for photographers? Systematic errors have serious implications for photographers affecting (but not limited to) the following issues: - Dodging and burning - Getting better models - Developing a consistent style - Scoping out locations site-unseen - Multi-tasking (camera settings, manual focus, prisms, lighting, model direction, etc.) Are all mistakes bad? No. This podcast will be the impetus for the next podcast about when mistakes can be good. That podcast will be called "organic mutation". This podcast is the followup to Precision. It's about "organic mutation" aka "happy mistakes". Where the last podcast was all about precision and not making mistakes, this podcast is about when mistakes are a blessing in disguise. Charles gives three examples when he made such mistakes and how the photography community responded to those images and where the value lies in making mistakes. "Jonathan Franklin is an investigative journalist who has reported for the New York Times, Boston Globe and the Guardian. Based in Santiago, Chile with his wife and 7 daughters he tends to live off the grid, especially when writing books. Or magazine stories in Esquire, GQ, Playboy, and Men’s Journal as he chronicles the world of extreme survival, cocaine madmen, and football mayhem, as well as the standard interviews with hit men, kidnappers and cocaine submarine commanders. In October 2010 Franklin secured a book deal to write 33 Men, the definitive account of the Chilean miners, a non fiction book about the experience of the miners in the 2010 Copiapó mining accident. He reported extensively from the San Jose mine for The Guardian and The Washington Post. Franklin's experiences and insider accounts became the basis of a 60 Minutes TV program about the miners, an article in People magazine, a series of audio lectures on the BBC and multiple articles around the world. Franklin says, "While 2,000 journalists were locked behind police lines, my 'Rescue Team' pass enabled me to experience up close the final six weeks of this miracle rescue. It was my honor to watch the drama unfold in its many moments of beauty and courage and comedy; and to see, first-hand, the profound unity that made this operation succeed." In 2015, he published the book 438 Days: An Extraordinary True Story of Survival at Sea, based on the account of José Salvador Alvarenga, the Salvadoran fisherman who spent 14 months adrift in the Pacific Ocean." In this podcast Charles talks to Jonathan Franklin about how he became a world-famous investigative journalist. Jonathan recounts stories of starting a detective agency at the age of 10, investigating the dean's office at Brown University for admission corruption, digging through the trash cans of the Rhode Island AND San Francisco Police Department, conning his way backstage at a U2 concert and then meeting the band, getting hired as a mortician at the Dover Air Force Base and uncovering the true number of dead American troops and more. It's clear that Jonathan possesses a unique ability to get the inside track. This podcast is an inside look at the man who got 2 of this century's biggest stories: 33 Men and 438 Days. Sometimes relationships change. And you either stay in or you get out. And/or sometimes the relationship changes you. This podcast is about my (Charles Lucima's) relationship with photography in the context of change and evolution and what I want out of this relationship. I bring up some parallels. Like my relationship with blackjack (yes, gambling) and mountain biking. We talk about some of the things I get from photography and some of the things I don't get from photography and even some things that I want now that I didn't even want before. What the hell am I talking about? Listen and find out. On this podcast we have documentary filmmaker Sean Dunne. Known for Oxyana (2013), Man in Van (2009) and American Juggalo (2011). His unique perspective strikes at the paradigm of traditional documentaries by capturing his subjects in their natural state without forcing a specific agenda or narrative. As such, Sean's films often evoke strong emotional responses. This is a thought-provoking conversation about being present, honest, and reflective. Sean's perspective contrasts my perspective of scripting videos and shoots by showcasing how you can "ride the wild" when you surrender to the present. Since Sean lives in NYC, we recorded this podcast by cobbling together two separate high quality recordings. As a failsafe measure, I also recorded our Skype session. "“Rising from Ashes” is a feature length documentary about two worlds colliding when cycling legend Jock Boyer moves to Rwanda, Africa to help a group of struggling genocide survivors pursue their dream of a national team. As they set out against impossible odds both Jock and the team find new purpose as they rise from the ashes of their past." - http://risingfromashesthemovie.com/about-film In this podcast we have documentary filmmaker T.C. Johnstone most known for his award-winning film Rising From Ashes. I talk to TC about how he became a filmmaker, developing and making Rising From Ashes, how he plans to follow that enormous success, and the commonalities between my journey and his journey! For someone who has achieved as much as he has, T.C. is super down-to-earth and just the nicest guy. In full disclosure, in our first conversation we had a technical issue that prevented us from finishing our conversation. As a result, this podcast is a two-part series that extends well into the second hour. As a reward for listening through the second hour you'll get a behind-the-scenes look at T.C. and some of the films that make us laugh. Enjoy! I grew up with guns and a dad that believed a good offense was the best defense. Through a dinner conversation I remember some events in my childhood involved guns and my dad. Through my friend's reaction I realized that these were not ordinary childhood experiences. And it got me thinking about what we take for granted to be "normal". And THAT became this podcast and a bigger conversation. What's "normal"? On this podcast we have Senior Photographer's Agent at Art Mix, Leigh Andersen. As a photo rep for 10 years, Leigh shares her insights on the industry, her roster of photographers, and the pitfalls that many budding photographers make when trying to get represented by a photography agency. If you're a photographer, I don't need to tell you how important this podcast is. Throughout this podcast I put myself in the audience's shoes and ask all the questions that any photographer would want to know of a photo rep. Enjoy!
