Everyone has a story to tell. Human stories about change, transformation and often redemption. Through real life story arcs, our special guests explain how they became who they are today. Join us for an inside look into some amazing stories.

In this episode, Charles interviews Winston Binch, Chief Digital Officer of Deutsch North America. Winston talks about how a lifelong passion for innovation and creativity became a successful career in advertising.

Chief Digital Officer, Deutsch North America

Winston Binch is one of the most accomplished digital leaders of his generation.  As Chief Digital Officer of Deutsch North America, he has grown the agency’s offering from 5 percent of overall revenue to 40 percent and has transformed the company from an advertising agency to a digital innovator — a feat that led Fast Company to recognize Deutsch as one of the most innovative companies in advertising.

His work has picked up honors from One Show, Comm Arts, UX Awards, AICP, the Andys, Effie Awards, and the Webby Awards. He has won at Cannes 30 times, including two Titanium Lions, three Grand Prix awards, and Interactive Agency of the Year three times. Winston was named one of Business Insider’s 2015 Most Creative People in Advertising, one of the 2014 Internationalist Innovators and a Top 25 iMedia Internet Marketer and Innovator.

Some of the most innovative digital in advertising history can be credited to Winston. He helped bring customization to Nike by way of Nike iD, Whopper Sacrifice to Burger King, and the Pizza Tracker to Domino's. Most recently, he reinvented Volkswagen's approach to online car shopping and is currently helping Taco Bell reimagine mobile ordering. In 2015, Deutsch was #2 on Ad Age’s Agency A-List.

Prior to Deutsch, Winston led the digital practice at CP+B where he served as partner, and before that he worked at R/GA and Sony Music. Winston is cofounder of Boulder Digital Works at the University of Colorado and the M-School: Institute of Marketing at LMU. He sits on the board of the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) and Protect Our Winters, and contributes to Harvard Business Review, Entrepreneur, and Adweek.

This is episode 4 of the LUCIMA Podcast series, "If Your Life Were a Movie".

Everyone has a story to tell. Human stories about change, transformation and often redemption. Through real life story arcs, our special guests explain how they became who they are today. Join us for an inside look into some amazing stories.

Here's what Charles had to say about Ronnie prior to this interview:

I've been wanting to get Ronnie on podcast ever since we started doing the "If Your Life Were a Movie" series. Seeing how he recovered from the crash is nothing short of a miracle. I mean, if you were to tell his story people would accuse you of making stuff up. As an endurance athlete since he was young, Ronnie had been training to be a Navy SEAL since he was 12 years old. After college he takes a stance against the war on terror and does not enlist for the Navy. By abruptly departing from his lifelong goal he falls into depression and becomes suicidal. At the suggestion of friends and family Ronnie starts cycling again and quickly becomes professional. Sprinting to the finish line at one of the biggest bicycle races of the year he crashes face first into a metal barrier at 42MPH. He breaks his arm in three places, shatters his face (almost loses an eye) and almost dies. In 25 days he is back on the bike (21 of those days spent in the hospital). I remember seeing him at the Rose Bowl a couple months after the crash. He had lost 35 pounds and looked like a shadow of the man he was before. To make matters worse Ronnie endured a divorce during the recovery of his crash.

And yet he still stands. Proud, optimistic and stronger than ever. He's been racing and even winning again barely a year after his crash.

And more impressive than his recovery is his ability to inspire others. Whether on Facebook, Instagram, or on Strava, Ronnie always looks for the opportunity to motivate and inspire his audience with personal stories and uplifting quotes. But where does he get his optimism? Where does he find inspiration why does he choose to inspire others? Why is he driven to succeed when others would so readily accept defeat? These are the questions I wanted to ask him.

There are few heroes in the world, but Ronnie Toth is one of mine. I hope you enjoy this podcast.

Mark Reay Pre-Interview Discussion

Per the Hollywood Reporter: "Mark Reay, a onetime male model who looks like a silver-fox socialite, takes photos of New York fashionistas during the day and sneaks up to a rooftop each night, huddling in a hidden sleeping bag until morning. Showing how he manages to keep his homelessness secret, director Thomas Wirthensohn (a model himself, who met Reay in the '90s and makes his debut here) offers a fascinating look at life in a city where getting by can be a lot more complicated than it seems. His investigation of Reay's psyche is less deep than one might hope for, but the observational material alone is enough to merit attention on the doc circuit — and probably to scare New Yorkers who live with the knowledge that good gigs can vanish in an instant." Usually we do this after the interview but after watching the documentary Homme Less, Keith and I had so many thoughts that we decided to discuss Mark before actually talking to Mark. This led to some opposing perspectives (as usual) and raised lots of questions that I eventually asked Mark. This is episode 5 of the LUCIMA Podcast series, "If Your Life Were a Movie". Everyone has a story to tell. Human stories about change, transformation and often redemption. Through real life story arcs, our special guests explain how they became who they are today. Join us for an inside look into some amazing stories. As it turns out Mark's life *is* a movie. The Hollywood Reporter writes: "Call it high-functioning homelessness: Mark Reay, a onetime male model who looks like a silver-fox socialite, takes photos of New York fashionistas during the day and sneaks up to a rooftop each night, huddling in a hidden sleeping bag until morning. Showing how he manages to keep his homelessness secret, director Thomas Wirthensohn (a model himself, who met Reay in the '90s and makes his debut here) offers a fascinating look at life in a city where getting by can be a lot more complicated than it seems. His investigation of Reay's psyche is less deep than one might hope for, but the observational material alone is enough to merit attention on the doc circuit — and probably to scare New Yorkers who live with the knowledge that good gigs can vanish in an instant." In this podcast Charles speaks with Mark via Skype as Mark still lives in New York City. The conversation reveals backstories and details about the making of the documentary and Mark answers some tough questions that arose from Charles and Keith's pre-interview discussion. Questions like, "Why don't you have long-term relationships? Why don't you just live with your mother? How many cigarettes do you smoke a day?" If you want an inside look at the inside look of Mark Reay, this is your podcast. Better Podcast Guests and Salesmanship

Keith is out of the office so Charles goes solo and gives a candid look at how to be a better podcast guest. While it may seem irrelevant if you don't plan on becoming a podcast guest, the techniques discussed really boil down to salesmanship and presentation. Therefore the ideas in this podcast really apply to all photographers because by learning how to be a better podcast guest you can improve your ability to sell yourself. And as photographers we are always trying to sell ourselves. Perhaps the commonality between podcasting, sales, and photography is simply being a good conversationalist. And good conversation really transcends the aforementioned niches and is universally appreciated. Enjoy!
